As of 2001 India census[2], Jharsuguda had a population of 75,570. Males constitute 52% of the population and females 48%. It has an average literacy rate of 69%, higher than the national average of 59.5%: male literacy being 77% and female literacy at 60%. Around 12% of the population of Jharsugudais under 6 years of age.
Economy
This cosmopolitan town is fast emerging as the economic hub of western Orissa. Currently, many small and medium scale steel units are being set up in the town vicinity, primary being Bhushan Steel & Power Ltd., SMC Power Generation Ltd., Action Ispat Ltd., Eastern Steel & Power Ltd., SPS Steel & Power Ltd. A few large scale units of Vedanta Alumina Ltd and Utkal Alumina International Ltd will be setting up units in the area
Transport
Since pre-independence days, the town has had a relatively developed transportation network. The main mode of transport is cycle rikshaw. However, from last few years auto rikshaws have also started for local transport. The main road starts from Sarbahal and goes till Beheramal.
Rail
The railway station comes under South Eastern Railway. Being an important junction on the erstwhile Bengal Nagpur Railways and the current Howrah-Mumbai route, Jharsuguda is directly connected to all the metros &states of India, especially Chhattisgarh, Orissa and Jharkhand.
Jharsuguda is connected to various towns of the state by State Highway 10 and National Highway 42.

Politics
Current MLA from Jharsuguda Assembly Constituency is Kishore Kumar Mohanty of BJD, who won the seat in State elections of 2004. He also won in 2000 as BJD candidate and in 1990 as JD candidate. Birendra Chandra Pandey of INC had won this seat in 1995 and in 1985, and also as INC(I) candidate in 1980. Sairindra Nayak of INC was MLA from this seat in 1977.[3]
