There are currently only about 320 persons of Indian origin settled in Vietnam, mainly in Ho Chi Minh City. Prior to the Vietnam War, there was a vibrant Indian community, primarily Tamils and specifically Chettiars. The community still maintains a Hindu temple in Ho Chi minh City, the Sri Mariamman temple which is also a tourist attarction.

Vietnam has a long historical association with India. Some of the earliest empires in Vietnam, namely the Cham, were Hindu and their architecture still can be seen at My Son, a United Nations World Heritage Site. Also, most Vietnamese practice Buddhism, which arrived from India in the 1st century CE.
