The Glion Institute of Higher Education is a hospitality school located in Switzerland. For more than 40 years, Glion has offered bachelor’s and postgraduate degrees to students aspiring to work in the hospitality and tourism industry.
Glion Institute of Higher Education's historyGlion was founded in 1962 by hotel entrepreneur Frédéric Tissot and Professor Walter Huntziker. The school continued to operate under its original leadership until it was sold in its entirety to Sylvan Learning Systems, Inc. in November, 2000. In 2002, Sylvan Learning Systems, Inc. changed its name to Laureate Education, Inc. and Les Roches became part of a division called Laureate International Universities. Laureate operates universities around the world, with more than 165,000 students each year in higher education programs. Recognition and AccreditationGlion is fully accredited by the New England Association of Schools and Colleges , Inc. through its Commission on Institutions of Higher Education. Additionally, Glion is recognized by the Canton of Fribourg and, is recognised by the Swiss Federal Government in the name of Les Roches-Gruyère University of Applied Sciences. Key Dates1885 The Bellevue and Belvédère Hotel opens ReputationIn September 2007, Taylor Nelson Sofres (TNS) Travel & Tourism (UK) the world’s largest provider of custom research and analysis conducted a broad industry survey amongst a large sample of hiring managers from leading international hospitality organizations around the world. (The survey was paid for by Laureate education, the owner of Glion and Les Roches. ) The primary purpose of this survey was to establish the relative ‘ranking’ of the various international hospitality management schools providing university level programs from which these employers are likely to recruit staff. Among the top 3 industry rankings were Glion Institute of Higher Education (2nd), Les Roches Hotel Management School (3rd) and École hôtelière de Lausanne (1st).
