The district occupies the eastern portion of the county and is one of three municipal units - the other two being the town of Yarmouth and the Yarmouth municipal district.
The Municipality of Argyle is part of the Nova Scotia tourism region, Yarmouth & Acadian Shores. It encompasses the Municipalities of Argyle, Clare, Yarmouth and the Town of Yarmouth.
In 1766, after his service in the French and Indian Wars, Capt. Ranald MacKinnon was given a land grant of 2000 acres. He called it Argyle because he was reminded of his previous home in the Highlands of Scotland.
