Girma Wolde-Giorgis (born December 1924 in Addis Ababa) is the President of Ethiopia. He was elected on October 8, 2001, as a relative unknown and a surprise choice, by a unanimous vote of the Ethiopian Parliament.[1] The Ethiopian presidency is largely a symbolic office with little power. Presidents serve six-year terms. Girma was re-elected as President on October 9, 2007.[2] Girma Wolde-Giorgis is from the Oromo ethnic nation of Ethiopia. He is a married father of five children. Girma first attended an Ethiopian Orthodox Church school and later joined the Teferi Mekonnen School in Addis Ababa where he followed his education until the Italian invasion. Then he studied at an Italian school "The Scuola Principe Piemonte" in Addis Ababa. Between 1950 and 1952, he received certificates in Management (from Holland), in Air Traffic Management (in Sweden) and Air Traffic Control (in Canada) under a training programme sponsored by the International Civil Aviation Organization. Upon returning to Ethiopia from Eritrea in 1990, he served as Board Member of the Ethiopian Red Cross Society and Head of its International Logistics Department.
