George County is a county located in the U.S. state of Mississippi. As of 2000, the population was 19,144. Its county seat is Lucedale[1]. George County is named for James Z. George, US Senator from Mississippi. George County is included in the Pascagoula, Mississippi, Metropolitan Statistical Area.

DemographicsAs of the census[2] of 2000, there were 19,144 people, 6,742 households, and 5,305 families residing in the county. The population density was 40 people per square mile (15/km²). There were 7,513 housing units at an average density of 16 per square mile (6/km²). The racial makeup of the county was 89.38% White, 8.82% African American, 0.24% Native American, 0.16% Asian, 0.84% from other races, and 0.57% from two or more races. 1.60% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.
In the county the population was spread out with 29.20% under the age of 18, 9.40% from 18 to 24, 28.60% from 25 to 44, 21.90% from 45 to 64, and 10.90% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 33 years. For every 100 females there were 100.60 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 98.60 males. The median income for a household in the county was $34,730, and the median income for a family was $39,386. Males had a median income of $33,575 versus $20,542 for females. The per capita income for the county was $14,337. About 13.00% of families and 16.70% of the population were below the poverty line, including 20.80% of those under age 18 and 20.20% of those age 65 or over.
