Gaalkacyo (Somali: Gaalkacyo) is the capital of the Mudug region of Somalia, and. The southern portion forms the administrative seat of the Galmudug state, while the Main and the northern portion is part of the Puntland state. The city has an estimated population of 545,000.
Gaalkacyo is located in central Somalia, and remains one of the most developed cities in the region. The city has built schools,such as omar samantar secondary school, the city has also some major universities such as the puntland state university, east african university and other private universites gaalkacyo has a major airport. The airport is already served by Puntland Administration. During the time of the Italian occupation the city was referred to as Gallacaio, and later, Rocca Littorio. It consists of the following districts: Wadajir, Horumar, Garsoor, Israac, New Garsoor, and Siinaay
