Engineering education is the activity of teaching engineering and technology, at school, college and university levels. The goal of engineering education is to prepare people to practice engineering as a profession and also to spread Technological Literacy, increase student interest in technical careers through science and math education and hands-on learning. Engineering education often begins with technology education in K-12 schools and is continued at college and university. (Douglas, Iverson & Kalyandurg, 2004). Engineering education is a part of the STEM initiative in United States public schools. The National Science Foundation is supporting research in Engineering Education through the National Center for Engineering and Technology Education among others.
In response to the growing STEM initiative, in 2005, Purdue University began offering the first doctoral program in Engineering Education. Since then, various degree programs and centers have been announced and/or created.
