Fifteen of the class were built, numbered DL36 - 50. They are powered by an EMD 12-710G3 engine, weigh 118t, and have a maximum speed of 153km/h.
With the dissolution of Australian National, the DL Class were transferred to National Rail, and then onto Pacific National in 2004. They are mainly used in New South Wales, but have also been seen in Victoria and Queensland. Nowadays, the class is usually marshalled as a second unit, behind an NR class. They have also been seen working in pairs.
The in-service members of the DL Class can be seen wearing the 3 different liveries of their successive owners: the Australia National Scheme, the National Rail scheme and the new Pacific National scheme.
