Portrait of Cornelius van Poelenburgh, from Antoine-Joseph Dézallier d'Argenville's Abrégé de la Vie des plus Fameux Peintres (Summary of the Life of the Most Famous Painters), 1745
He initially trained with Abraham Bloemaert. He traveled to Rome where he was influenced by Adam Elsheimer. Invited to London by Charles I of England, he soon returned to his native Holland. He painted mostly small landcapes with mythical or religious figures or passages, in the style of Claude Lorraine.
