History

The gord of Chrzanów was founded probably in the 10th century or earlier, but the first document that mentions the settlement is dated to the 12th century. The town privileges were given to Chrzanów probably in 1393.

Chrzanów has always been a Polish town. Until the 20th century, Chrzanów was a private town of several nobility families. It has never been surrounded by defensive walls. It was mainly a trade town.

Before the second world war about a half of the town's population were Jewish. During the war most of them were murdered by the nazi in the Auschwitz concentration camp (located nearly 20 km from the town).

The town is also the corporate centre of the large locomotive factory Fablok.
