ICD-9 709.8

Chapped lips is a condition whereby the lips become dry and possibly cracked. It may be caused by the evaporation of moisture.

Treatments

Lip balm can often provide temporary relief, though it should not be used extensively. Petroleum jelly (or Vaseline) should be avoided - it may cause temporary relief but worsens the problem in the long run. One should avoid licking their lips as saliva contains the enzyme amylase, which can damage the already compromised lip tissue.

Home Remedies

Honey - Has Antibacterial properties which can help heal and sooth chapped lips.
