Cambridge is a town in the Waikato region of the North Island of New Zealand. Situated 24 kilometres southeast of Hamilton, on the banks of the Waikato River, Cambridge is known as "The Town of Trees". With a population of 15,192 as of the 2006 census,1 it is the biggest municipality in the Waipa District and still growing rapidly.
The town is now best known for its thoroughbred horse stables, which have produced many champion horses in the sports of racing and showjumping.
Notable natives are members of The Datsuns as well as the equestrian double Olympic gold medal winner Mark Todd. Lake Karapiro, recognised as one of the premium rowing lakes in the world, is close by, producing several world rowing champions, notably Rob Waddell and the Evers-Swindell twins, Georgina and Caroline, Mahe Drysdale and James Dallinger. World Champion and Olympic Gold Medalist cyclist Sarah Ulmer also lives and trains in Cambridge, making Cambridge deserving of its new moniker "Town of Trees AND Champions". Former New Zealand and Australasian champion archer Brooke La Pine also called Cambridge home for 23 years.
The 2010 world championship rowing will be held at Lake Karapiro.
