Bunmei (文明, Bunmei^?) was a Japanese era name (年号,, nengō,^?, lit. "year name") after Ōnin and before Chōkyō. This period spanned the years from 1469 through 1487. The reigning emperor was Go-Tsuchimikado-tennō (後土御門天皇, Go-Tsuchimikado-tennō^?).^[1]

Change of era

• Bunmei gannen (文明元年, Bunmei gannen^?); 1469: The era name was changed to mark an event or a number of events. The old era ended and a new one commenced in Ōnin 3.

Events of the Bunmei era

• Bunmei 2, in the 7th month (1468): Ichijo Kaneyoshi was relieved of his duties as "kampaku," Kaneyoshi age was 69.^[2]
• Bunmei 3, in the 12th month (January 18, 1469): The former-Emperor Go-Hanazono died at age 52.^[2]
• Bunmei 5, on the 19th day of the 3rd month (1473): Yamana Mochitoyo-nudo Souzen died at age 70.^[3]
