History

The College is a provider of higher education by degree and initial teacher training. Until acquiring university college status in 2006, the University of Leicester validated its qualifications. The college now awards its own degrees.

It was originally known as the Diocesan Training School for Mistresses, then Lincoln Diocesan Training College and then Bishop Grosseteste College before adopting its current name in 2006. It was founded as a teacher training college for the Diocese of Lincoln in 1862. The college initially occupied the premises of an earlier, unsuccessful training establishment for male teachers, built in 1842 (Zebedee 1962). This building is still in use.

The college takes its present name from Robert Grosseteste, a 13th century Bishop of Lincoln, theologian and scholar.

The incumbent principal is Professor Muriel Robinson.

In 2008 Dame Judith Mayhew was made Provost of Bishop Grosseteste University College.

Social life

Bishop Grosseteste has few university-organised entertainments, perhaps due to the high numbers of mature and local students who go there. However the Students' Union offer a variety of clubs and societies, these include:

  • Big Brother
  • Drama
  • Eco
  • English
  • Extreme Sports
  • Football
  • Hockey
  • Music
  • Musicals

  • Poker
  • Rugby
  • RAG

Sports

The university doesn’t yet compete at BUSA level, most teams are organised by students. The brand-new sports centre is free but fairly basic: a couple of acres with football pitch, hockey pitch, tennis and netball courts and a gym. [2]

Accommodation

With more than 1,000 full-time students and only 270 places in halls,[2] getting a place in halls can be a struggle. Having said that, with such a large number of mature and local students, few first years actually need or want to live in. No second or third years live in at all. [2] The three halls are within a few minutes’ walk of each other and the campus. Private accommodation is relatively easy to find within walking distance of campus and other student essentials – especially in the Newport area. In university there’s a full-time accommodation officer who provides a list of vacancies and approved landlords. Bishop Grosseteste also runs an open evening to introduce students and landlords – and the officers on hand to advise on tenant troubles.

Students' Union

Bishop Grosseteste University College has a very active Students' Union, with two sabbatical officers, a development manager and a part-time executive of 18 students, they provide a vareity of entertainmet and activities throughout the year.

The Welfare team provide students with a strong student based support network and along with their confidential listening service, aim to support students throughout their studies at Bishop Grosseteste. The Welfare team provide a number of awareness campaigns during the year, promoting various sexual health issues and other contemporary issues prominent in today's society.

The Entertainments team provide students with regular entertainment, ranging from live music, live comedy, themed pub crawls and their annual music festival.

Bishop Grosseteste Students' Union has a very well established RAG team who have been raising money for charities for over 35 years, Bishop Grosseteste Students' Union RAG Teams raise on average £10,000 a year for their four chosen charities, which considering Bishop Grosseteste's student numbers, is very impressive.

The current Students' Union president is Nick Cox.
