Betaine-homocysteine methyltransferase
Homocysteine, a potentially cytotoxic amino acid, is remethylated to methionine in two ways:
By Methionine Synthase (MTR): homocysteine + 5-methyltetrahydrofolate ---> methionine + Dihydrofolate
By BHMT: homocysteine + betaine ---> methionine + dimethylglycine
BHMT is expressed most predominantly in the liver and kidney[1].
