Auntie Mame is a 1958 film based on the novel of the same name, starring Rosalind Russell and directed by Morton DaCosta . The screenplay was adapted by Betty Comden and Adolph Green from the play by Jerome Lawrence and Robert Edwin Lee and the novel by Patrick Dennis . The original music score was composed by Bronislau Kaper . A musical version of the story was released in 1974 starring Lucille Ball as the titular character.
Plot
The film stars Rosalind Russell as a flamboyant, mad-cap aunt of a young boy Patrick, who is left orphaned when his father dies. Left in Mame's care, Patrick is quickly introduced to his aunts' free-spirited and eccentric liftstyle. As Mame watches her young nephew grow into a man she attempts to rescue him from the stuffy, conventional lifestyle towards which he is heading.
Awards
The film was nominated for Academy Awards for Best Actress in a Leading Role (Rosalind Russell), Best Actress in a Supporting Role (Peggy Cass), Best Art Direction-Set Decoration, Black-and-White or Color , Best Cinematography, Color , Best Film Editing and Best Picture . It was also nominated for three Golden Globes of which it won two.
