The town was the site of several battles over the centuries, the last being in April 1945 when the area was defended by the Germans against the Allied advance during Operation Roast'sBattle of the Argenta Gap. Much of the Comacchio lagoon is today a wildlife sanctuary and Argenta is home of the Marsh Museum which offers many facilities for bird study.
