Until 2000, the 914 area code also served Rockland, Putnam, Orange, Dutchess counties, and portions of Ulster, Sullivan, and Delaware counties, in addition to Westchester. However, due to the growing popularity and commercialization of cell phones and internet dial-up connections, 914 was split on June 5, 2000, with Westchester retaining 914, with the remainder getting 845.
In addition to the aforementioned counties, 914 also included Long Island's Nassau and Suffolk until the 516 area code was created in 1951.
Since 2004, a block of numbers used by MCI has also been used in the Green Zone of Baghdad, Iraq to provide United States government officials and humanitarian workers access to "local" calls.1
