Area code 860 is a telephonearea code that covers the eastern and northwestern parts of Connecticut. The area code stretches along the eastern and northern borders as well as small portion of the western border. The boundary with area code 203 runs along towns such as New Milford, Watertown, and Southington. The area code was created in 1995 to replace 203 when that area code was cut back to roughly Fairfield and New Haven counties.
The CT Public Utility commission in August 1999 proposed an area code overlay for the 860 area code; the new area code was to be 959. This proposal was postponed for nearly a decade due to number conservation measures; in September 2008, it was announced that the 959 area code will overlay 860 within two years (likewise, 475 will overlay 203 in a similar time frame.)
