Archival informatics is the study of systems and technology in archives and how they have affected the nature and use of archives. As digital artifacts gradually overtaking traditional (paper-based) documents as the main sources of archives acquisition, Archival informatics also progresses to cover the study of the nature of digital artifacts (for example, how they are composed by digital technologies and how they can be preserved, as well as the impacts the digital revolution has on the archival functions performed by archives.
