Anawalt is a town in McDowell County, West Virginia, United States. The population was 272 at the 2000 census. Anawalt was incorporated in 1949. It is named in honor of Colonel Anawalt, who was then manager of Union Supply Company, a subsidiary of the United States Steel Company. Coal mining remains the town's chief industry. Anawalt is the closest town for the unincorporated communities of Jenkinjones, O'Tool, Conklintown, Pageton, Leckie, and Little Creek.
GeographyAnawalt is located at (37.335800, -81.437233)[3]. According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 1.7 km² (0.6 mi²), all land. DemographicsAs of the census[1] of 2000, there were 272 people, 114 households, and 77 families residing in the town. The population density was 161.6/km² (418.4/mi²). There were 148 housing units at an average density of 87.9/km² (227.7/mi²). The racial makeup of the town was 90.44% White, 9.19% African American, and 0.37% from two or more races. There were 114 households out of which 25.4% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 50.0% were married couples living together, 12.3% had a female householder with no husband present, and 31.6% were non-families. 28.9% of all households were made up of individuals and 18.4% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.39 and the average family size was 2.91. In the town the population was spread out with 21.0% under the age of 18, 7.4% from 18 to 24, 28.7% from 25 to 44, 26.8% from 45 to 64, and 16.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 42 years. For every 100 females there were 83.8 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 83.8 males. The median income for a household in the town was $13,333, and the median income for a family was $17,321. Males had a median income of $30,938 versus $14,375 for females. The per capita income for the town was $8,953. About 37.3% of families and 37.0% of the population were below the poverty line, including 35.6% of those under the age of eighteen and 28.3% of those sixty five or over. References
