BackgroundShe was born Alice Stone and grew up in Cincinnati, Ohio. Ilchman received her B.A. in religion from Mount Holyoke College in 1957, her M.P.A. from Syracuse University in 1958, and Ph.D. from the London School of Economics in 1965. CareerShe directed Peace Corps training projects at the University of California, Berkeley, as well as taught South Asian studies there. She also taught, and was a Dean at, Wellesley College. She next served as Assistant Secretary of State for Educational and Cultural Affairs under former President Jimmy Carter from 1979-1981. According to the Washington Post:
