Adalbert Schneider (10 March 1904 – 27 May 1941) was the 1st Artillery Officer on board the German battleship Bismarck and was awarded the Knight's Cross of the Iron Cross for sinking HMS Hood on 24 May 1941 in the Battle of the Denmark Strait. On the morning of 27 May 1941 Group West received a transmission from Bismarck at 02:21 recommending Schneider for the Knight's Cross. At 03:51 a reply confirmed that Hitler had awarded him the Ritterkreuz1. Adolf Eich had witnessed Admiral Günther Lütjens and Captain Ernst Lindemann shaking his hand after receiving the award2. Schneider was killed only 5 hours and 11 minutes later during, and just 15 minutes into, Bismarck's final battle, when a 8 inch shell from Norfolk hit his position in the main gun director1. Awards
