The Abita Brewing Company is a craft brewery located in Abita Springs, Louisiana, 30 miles north of New Orleans. They first began brewing beer in 1986. That year, the company produced 1,500 barrels of beer. In 2007, they produced over 75,000 barrels of beer and 3,000 barrels of root beer. The brewery estimates their production for 2008 will exceed 90,000 barrels.4 5
Abita Golden, Abita Amber and Abita Turbodog are sold in various markets across the United States. Abita Brewing Company is the 17th largest Craft Brewery and the 31st largest brewery of any category in the United States ranked by volume sold in 2007.6
The company brews its beer with water from artesian wells in Abita Springs. They produce several types of beer year round, and also produce a series of seasonal beers. In August 2005, Stuff Magazine named Abita's Turbodog Ale as the best beer made in America.7
The company also produces Abita root beer using Louisiana sugarcane. This makes Abita's root beer unusual in that it is sweetened with raw cane syrup, as opposed to high-fructose corn syrup.
The company also runs a brewpub in Abita Springs.
