Plot

Redemption begins with a brief prologue showing a young boy being kidnapped at night and drafted as a soldier into the militia.4

The storyline takes place on Inauguration Day for the next U.S. President, Allison Taylor,5 and is shot partially in South Africa.67 "Jack is a soul in turmoil and has been moving from place to place trying to find somewhere he can be at peace," says co-executive producer, Manny Coto. "But he winds up in Africa in the middle of a military coup." Meanwhile, Bauer is subpoenaed to appear before the Senate hearing while in Africa, but doesn't want to go.8

In a recent interview Kiefer Sutherland revealed that 24: Redemption, which serves as a prequel to Season Seven, was inspired by the situation in Rwanda and the U.S. government's response to it. "The truth is, one of the things that was said in the prequel, which I think has been a massive problem with how the Western World has dealt with Africa, no one can justify going there, because they have no viable reason -- meaning oil or money. Here [the president's] response is a human one. We can stop a genocide. I think that that's something that Bill Clinton apologized for not doing with Rwanda and we centered a show around that9."

Production

With the 2007–2008 Writers Guild of America strike delaying the season for an entire year, producers were exploring ways to get back on the air earlier. Ideas included airing webisodes or mobisodes.10 “We were going to be off the air for a while and how do you bridge that gap. We thought about doing something online and after talking with [executive producer] Howard Gordon we decided to do it on air.” said Kevin Reilly, President of Entertainment at FOX.11

On April 30, producers began scouting locations in Africa in order to film the prequel in the upcoming weeks.1213 The original plan was to shoot three days worth of scenes in Africa and then have Simi Valley, California fill in for the location.10 After realizing it would be difficult to fake, it was decided to shoot the majority of the movie on location in Cape Town, South Africa.14 Filming took place from June 4 to June 20 with the final scenes being shot in Los Angeles, California.15

On July 13, director Jon Cassar revealed on his personal website that principal shooting for the prequel has been completed and post-production has begun.16

Cast and characters

The majority of characters will carry over into the seventh season.21

Trailer

The trailer, first shown at the Television Critics Association, was leaked online on July 16, 2008 showing Jack Bauer helping young children try to escape a military coup that is being set up in Africa, with the help of his friend Carl Benton (Robert Carlyle). At the same time, President Noah Daniels (Powers Boothe) is seeing Allison Taylor (Cherry Jones) into office, when Tom Lennox (Peter MacNicol) informs her of the crisis in Africa.

An exclusive six minute clip was shown to fans at Comic-Con 2008. In the scene, Jack escorts a group of African children to the US embassy and becomes involved in a gunfight on a crowded street.1014 A new trailer was released on the Sky 1 site, highlighting Jack's displeasure at being sent back to Washington 22.

As of September 21, 2008, Fox has uploaded a new and slightly longer trailer. This new trailer focuses more on the conflict in Africa and how Jonas Hodges is involved in the conflict.23

DVD release

On November 25, 2008 FOX will release an extended creator's cut of 24: Redemption on DVD. Extras include commentary, "Making of" and "Children of War" featurettes, a brief summary of the sixth season, an alternate Season 7 trailer featuring scenes from the first fourteen episodes, and the first sixteen minutes of the Season 7 premiere episode.224

It is scheduled for release in the UK on December 1, 2008 following its broadcast on Sky1.25 Two DVDs will be released: a single disc edition and a two-disc edition that contains special featues not evident on the single disc release 26.
