Overview of the stages
The 2009 Tour de France will be the 96th Tour de France. Beginning on July 4, it will start in the principality of Monaco with a 15 kilometer individual time trial that includes a section of the Circuit de Monaco. Stage 2 will also start in Monaco. The official start announcement was made in Monaco and attended by Prince Albert on December 14, 2007.12 A destination of this edition of Tour de France will be Barcelona.3
The race will visit a total of six nations: Monaco, France, Spain, Andorra, Switzerland and Italy (during stage 16).456 The total length is 3445 kilometers, including 93 in time-trials. There will be seven mountain stages with three uphill finishes, and one medium-mountain stage.7 A team time trial will be held for the first time since the 2005 Tour de France.
Lance Armstrong, the seven-time winner from 1999 to 2005, is coming out of retirement and considering competing in the 2009 Tour de France.8
