This season was a historic one for domestic football in England, as Tottenham Hotspur F.C. became the first club in the twentieth century to "do the Double" by winning both the League and the FA Cup competitions. Ironically, the first club to achieve this feat overall, Preston North End, was relegated in last place - and to date have not played in the Premier League at all.

The maximum wage (of £20 per week, equivalent to £1200 in 2005, many times less than top footballers currently receive per week) was abolished in January 1961 after players (led by Jimmy Hill) had threatened to go on strike over the issue. Johnny Haynes of Fulham soon afterwards became the first £100-per-week footballer.
ITV won a contract to show 26 live Football League matches this season, but it was cancelled after one goalless match (between Blackpool and Bolton Wanderers) and there were no further live League matches until October 1983.
