- 11 May - The British House of Commons votes in favour of the Irish Universities Bill. This ultimately leads to the establishment of the National University of Ireland and Queen's University of Belfast.
- 19 May - Work begins on a monument to Charles Stewart Parnell in Upper Sackville Street.
